At KuKuRuZa Gourmet Popcorn, we try to give back every chance we get to the communities we've become a part of and that have given so much to us. We do so through our community donations program, through which we provide more than $2,500 of support every year to more than 100 organizations.   Today, we'd like to introduce an organization we've had the pleasure to work together with recently – University of Washington FIUTS. The Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS) was founded in 1948 and has been a meeting place for students and others who share a curiosity about other cultures and interest in finding common ground and mutual understanding both on campus and in the Seattle area. They successfully put on their annual Cultural Fest event in February. As a shoutout to one of our favorite nonprofits that we've had the chance to work with, today we’re going to tell you about Seattle’s North Helpline. Started in 1989, North Helpline began with a small group of volunteers who, by noticing the difficulty of their neighbors putting food on their tables on top of paying rent and covering utilities, proactively began collecting food and financial support for them. They saw the importance of supporting their neighbors when they needed assistance and came up with a system to provide and distribute that support to those most in need in their community. Founded in 1988 by local chef and entrepreneur David Lee, FareStart began as a business providing food for homeless shelters, recognizing a need to serve Seattle’s homeless and disadvantaged populations. In 1992, FareStart became a nonprofit organization, training the individuals they were serving. Lee recognized how powerful and uniting food was in transforming these individuals’ lives and sought out to empower them. Through their intensive training programs, FareStart prepares homeless and disadvantaged men and women for jobs in the food services industry, helping them achieve self-sufficiency. FareStart has transformed nearly 7,000 lives, while also serving over 6 million meals to disadvantaged men, women and children.   FareStart Students On Thursday, June 5th, FareStart will host the Guest Chef Spectacular, a premier tasting event celebrating these achievements and further supporting the organization’s values of acceptance respect, openness, collaboration, and sustainability.
