Caramel Corn has become a staple in many households as the perfect go-to snack. With the natural, subtle saltiness from the popcorn and sweet taste from the caramel, it's no wonder so many people love this sweet treat. So how did caramel corn come to be?
Did you know caramel corn was around, in some form or another, as early as the 1800s? It was first made public in the 1890s by German immigrant brothers, Louis and Frederick Rueckheim. The Rueckehim brothers settled in Chicago and brought their initial caramel corn concoction, a mixture of popcorn and molasses, to the World's Fair. While it was very well received, many voiced that it was too sticky, prompting the brothers to revisit the recipe and create their caramel corn with a lighter coating of caramel.
